The Department of Education Region 1 (DepEd R1) partnered with the National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP), facilitated a Cyber Safety in Schools Training via MS Teams platform held on February 19, 2021. Said training aimed to equip school administrators and teachers with necessary skills in protecting the learners against violence, abuse and bullying in online world specifically in the altered landscape of learning.

Among the participants who presented the Schools Division of Ilocos Sur were Dr. Gemmalyn Jacosalem, Principal IV of Santa Lucia South Central School; Mr. Danilo Quitoriano and Mr. Conrado Asejo of Teodoro Hernaez National High School (THNHS); and Ms. Arlene Ariate of Conconig Elementary School.

Atty. Leilani P. Vecina, Officer-in-Charge, Office of the Assistant Regional Director of this Regional Office was invited as Resource Speaker and discussed the topic entitled, “The Overview on Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC). Atty. Vecina emphasized the relevance of said training because there are insufficient laws and resources to investigate, prosecute perpetrators and rescue and rehabilitate victims. She stressed that schools must be trained to protect learners against online exploitation.

Mr. Elmer Belmonte, Guidance Counselor III of Tagudin National High School presented Internet Safety at School focusing on digital literacy for teachers and ensuring safe and secure digital space for learners.

In the afternoon, Atty. Rose Marie M. Wailan, Attorney III of the Schools Division of La Union presented the topic entitled, “Cyber Bullying: its Risks and Ways to Prevent it”. After which, Ms. Celeste Marie R. Nugal, Special Investigator III enlightened the participants on handling online child protection concerns during pandemic.
